"I don't have any info on your query, but I am just beginning to search for info on my husbands family - Phipps.
However, we believe that Levi Phipps, my husband's great, great grandfather, who was from Magoffin Co. KY, should have had the surname of Howard. His mother never married the father-a Howard, and gave him her surname of Phipps. If you have any info I would appreciate your help.
Regarding the name of Montgomery, my husbands grandma's name is Roxie (Montgomery) Phipps. She two is from Magoffin Co. KY.

I have ancestors in the same area of Ky
On the 1830 Morgan Co. census Phipps, Montgomery, Howard
are within a few lines of each other.
This area was in Magoffin Co. KY at a later date.
