I recently came across this entry in a book on the Torrance family.
It has a passage relevant to my great, great great grandmother, Elizabeth Phippenny.
"STILES AUGUSTUS TORRANCE, son of Stiles and Matilda (Hibbard) Torrance, b. Lancaster, N. Y., Aug. 12, 1808; m. (i) Collins, N. Y., Jan. 1, 1844, Lydia Cassandra, dau. of Enos and Parmela (Pearson) Southwick. She was b. Collins, N. Y., Sept. 12, 1822; d. Persia, N. Y., Jan. 25, 1852. He m. (ii) Gowanda, N. Y., June 3, 1856, Elizabeth HAMMOND (nee Pipheny)," (Note: Phippenny is the spelling I have, although I've also seen it spelled Phippeny, Phippeney and Phippen.) "... a widow. She was b. Pompey, N. Y., Jan. 10, 1811. She m. (i) Franklin HAMMOND, b. Pompey, N. Y., Jan. 13, 1829." (Note: This is a mistake. They are giving the date of Franklin and Elizabeth's marriage as HIS birth date. Franklin was actually born on Feb. 8, 1804) "... She d. Nortonville, Ks., Feb. 26, 1885. He d. Gowanda, N. Y., June 17, 1852, leaving three children, Francilia, Adelbert and Climena. Climena resides Trumansburgh, N. Y." (Note: no mention is made of Franklin and Elizabeth's 5 other children, including Clestia, who is my mother's maternal great-grandmother)
So apparently, Elizabeth Phippenny Hammond married into the Torrance family after Franklin Hammond died on 6/17/1852.
What also was of interest to me was that this excerpt gives the name of one of the children as Climena, which I had deciphered from my grandfather's handwritten notes as Chrisena. (See below)
Franklin Hammond (2-8-1804 to 6/17/1852) and Elizabeth Phippenny
(1-10-1811 to 2-26-1885) were married on January 13, 1829, and had 8 children.
Amelia - born 5/6/1830
Amarcia - born 3/23/1833
Adelia - born 10/20/1836
Clestia - born 4-15-1838
Arriela - born 4-2-1840
Francelia - born 9-3-1842
Adelbert - born 4-3-1849
Chrisena (Climena)- born 6-11-1854
Do any Phippen or Phippenny family researchers recognize any of these names?
I am particularly interested in finding out Elizabeth's parents.
