Clara:

Hi! Sorry for the delay in getting back to you! About the Finney/Phinney surname. There are so many variations and misspellings, it is ridiculous! I was looking for Allen McKean Phinney's mother (Melinda Emily Ballard Finney) and two youngest brothers (Hyland/Hiland/Highland and Herrick/Hereck/Hareck) in the 1870 Federal Census for Rock Co., WI, and I could not find them, but I knew they were there (I was using a search engine using every possible variation I could think of). Anyway, I decided to go through the census household by household and lo and behold! they were there, but the enumerator had spelled the surname "Furney." I was so relieved to find them, but I was kicking myself because I should have thought to do the more thorough search earlier.

Also, in the 1860 Federal Census for Rock Co., WI, there is a Nelson Finney/Phinney family. Matter of fact, there are several Finney/Phinney families and in-law families there. Nathan and Melinda moved their family to WI from PA sometime between 1858 and 1860 because in the 1860 Census for Rock Co., WI, they claim their youngest son, age 2, was b. in PA.

These are the Finneys/Phinneys found in the Index of the "Wisconsin Volunteers; War of the Rebellion 1861-1865; Arranged Alphabetically; Compiled under the direction of the Adjutants General during the years 1895-1899; Published by the State; Madison, WI; Democrat Printing Co.; 1914."

1. Finney, Alvin (T.);Pvt.; Co. F, 13th WI Inf. (Allen's brother)
2. Finney, Anson C.; Pvt.; Co. F, 13th WI Inf. (Allen's brother)
3. Finney, Charles G.; Capt. & AQM; U.S. Vols.
4. Finney, Edwin E.; Musician; Band; 2nd WI Inf.
5. Finney, Edwin E.; Pvt.; Co. C, 46th WI Inf.
6. Finney, Eli B.; Corp.; Co. D, 43rd WI Inf.
7. Finney, Milo P.; Pvt.; Co. B, 43rd WI Inf.
8. Finney, Patrick; Pvt.; Co. A, 7th WI Inf.
9. Finn'cum, Mark; Lt. Col.; Cos. F & S; 7th WI Inf.
10. Finnie, Christian; Pvt.; Co. D, 17th WI Inf.
11. Phinney, Alvin N. a/k/a Phinney, Allen McKean; Pvt.; Co. G, 1st U.S. Sharpshooters
12. Phinney, George D.; Pvt.; Co. A, 7th WI Inf.
13. Phinney, George W.; Pvt.; Co. H. 23rd WI Inf.
14. Phinney, Jabez; Pvt.; Co. H, 8th WI Inf.
15. Phinney, Jeremiah T.; Pvt.; Co. D, 30th WI Inf.
16. Phinney, Lucius; Pvt.; Co. A, 7th WI Inf.
17. Phinney, Nelson; Pvt.; Co. H, 3rd WI Cav.
18. Phinney, Philander; Capt.; Co. E, 50th WI Inf.
19. Phinney, William H.; Pvt.; 8th Battery

Allen's oldest brother, Alfred Finney a/k/a Alford Phinney, was a member of Co. #, 52nd PA Vol. Inf. He enlisted as a pvt. and was promoted to corp. before he was mustered out.

Also found in the WI roster are Allen M. Phinney's future brother-in-law and his brother:

1. Foot, John F.; Pvt.; Co. A, 1st Heavy Battery (Olive's future husband)
2. Foot, Smith; Pvt.; Co. F, 13th WI Inf.

In future censuses their surname goes back and forth from Foot to Foote.

Anyway, if you would be so kind to let me know how our families are related, I would be very much interested.

Lynne B. Howell
