I think the relationship is only commercial.
I have some pictures which I will scan and post to you, but as I do not think I can post them to this forum (at least I do not see a way to upload a photo), I will need to know your email address, or someother way you want to do it.
Thanks. BTW you will note in the 1910 Census of Wilkinsburg that your grandfather (John) lived at 447 Ella Street and my grandfather Walter lived at 453 1/2 Ella Street. I have a picture of my grand father and I THINK your grandfather with a child in his arms.
The very interesting thing about the Census was that for the first time I realized that your grandfather was 4 years older than my grandfather. Then I looked closely and found that John C. was listed as "Emp" - Employer !!!! Because my grandfather appears to have done very well financially from a very young age I always assumed that he was the lead partner in Covalt and Smith. The "Emp" changed all that because I note that the listing for Walter says, "W" which tells me he was not the boss. That was a huge reversal for me.
I only discovered this close address match very recently.
I also have a letter from Mrs. Ruth McKibbin-Dunbar that I think references your grandmother. Ruth is 93 years old now and was a school teacher for many many years in Dormont, PA. Her mother Hattee McKibbin writes in one of her letters (March 10, 1958) "I was so sorry to hear of Mrs. Covalt's illness..." I think this might have been a reference to your grandmother, as you reference your grandmother Mabel Philp Covalt dying on 28Dec1959.
Ruth McKibbin Dunbar has a phone number of 412-341-4342. She was my mother's best friend. My mother was the only daughter of Walter Irving Smith and Florence Tabor Smith. Ruth might have met John B. Covalt and Mable.
I was just in Dormont for the first time in my life two weeks ago, and met Ruth. She has A FANTASTIC MEMORY. We went to the Dormont Historical Society and they found a picture of someone they thought was her. She said, "Yes that is me at my birthday when I was 4 years old". She then proceeded to name the other 10 boys and girls !!!! Amazing- astounding.
I will also scan a photo that was taken in Chicago in 1897. The scene includes a barber chair. I realize now that one of the men in the photo could be your grandfather.
Enough for now.
