There is a DNA donor whose Phillips ancestor appears to be James S. Phillips, who married Nancy (Layton) Dolihan 11 Dec 1855 in Keokuk Co., IA. Their son, William David Phillips b: 7 Feb 1857, used both David and William as his given name. By the 1860 census Nancy Phillips with dtr Emeline Dolihan and son, William Phillips, resided in Logan Co., IL, where Nancy was living prior to the marriage. James S. Phillips is nowhere around, nor does he appear in either Logan Co., IL or Keokuk Co., IA for the 1850 census; however, he may be the James Phillips age 22 b: OH, living in Mahoning Co., OH, where Aaron Phillips is also living, with the 3 younger boys. The 1840 census for Aaron in Youngstown, Trumbull, OH reflects a son 10-14, who may be James S. Phillips who was 12 in 1840.Explaining the DNA results would best be served by going to the Phillips Surname DNA project and looking at kit#169512 under Family Group 06. You will find a close match to 2 Phillips cousins, whose common ancestor is John Phillips b: 1768.There is one other 36/37 match to Zachariah Lee, my wife's grgrgrandfather, who lived in the Augusta and Rockingham Co., VA area. I haven't been able to tie the families together to this point; although, many of the Rockingham Co., VA families descended from Stephen Phillips of Middlesex Co., NJ.
