Hi, Bruce,
I can find your Zenas Phillips on the 1850, 1860, 1870, and 1880 censuses in Madison Co NY.His name appears different several different times, but I think that is partly a result of transcription errors. Here is the info:
1850 MADISON CO NY CENSUS
Genette (looks like Geneth) Phillips 25, bc 1825 NY
Louisa Phillips 24, bc 1826 NY
Mary Phillips 4, bc 1846 NY
Daniel Phillips 3, bc 1847 NY
Colvin (looks like Calvin) Phillips 1, bc 1849 NY
1860 MADISON CO NY CENSUS
Zenas Phillip 35, bc 1825 NY
Louisa Phillip 33, bc 1827 NY
Lanny (looks like Luanny) Phillip (female) 15, bc 1845 NY
Daniel Phillip 14, bc 1846 NY
Harvey Phillip 9, bc 1851 NY
Alonzo Phillip 6, bc 1854 NY
Jane Phillip 5, bc 1855 NY
Ellen Phillip 3, bc 1857 NY
Almira Phillip 1, bc 1859 NY
1870 MADISON CO NY CENSUS
James (looks like Zames) Phillips 35, bc 1835 NY
Louisa Phillips 40, bc 1830 NY
Harvey Phillips 19, by 1851 NY
Alonzo Phillips 17, bc 1853 NY
Jane Phillips bc 15, 1855 NY
Ellen Phillips 14, bc 1856 NY
Minda Phillips 11, bc 1859 NY
James Phillips 9, bc 1861 NY
Lucy Phillips 2, bc 1868 NY
1880 MADISON CO NY CENSUS
Zenas Phillips 63, bc 1817 NY NY NY
Louisa Phillips 52, bc 1828 NY NY NY
Alonzo Phillips 27, bc 1853 NY
James Phillips 18, bc 1862 NY
Lucy Phillips 13, bc 1867 NY
Emma Phillips 11, bc 1869 NY
His name in 1850 appears to be spelled Geneth, but perhaps the census taker simply misunderstood. In other words, perhaps he or his wife said his name was Zenas, but the census taker thought they said Geneth. On the 1870 census, his name is transcribed in the index as James, but the original census looks like his name starts with a Z, not a J.So I think the census taker was trying to spell Zenas but it came out looking like James.
Anyway, unfortunately the earlier censuses do not show the names of all the people in the household, so it is impossible to see whose household Zenas was living in on the 1840 census. However, there was a Simon Phillips on the same page as Daniel Dunham in 1840, and Simon had a male in his household who was the right age to be Zenas.Back in those days, people usually married someone who lived nearby, so it is possible that Simon was the father of Zenas. But that is just a guess.
Hope this helps a little bit.
Sincerely,
