Nancy,
Thanks so very much for your assistance.I found the same census information & agree with your conclusions/theories.
Rev Silas Jordan Fincher was born in the portion of Mecklenburg County, NC which became Union County, NC when it was formed.SJF's parents are not known but he does state that they were born in NC.He married 3 times: SB Starnes (no one knows what initials stand for), Elizabeth Blount & Mary Ellen James Barnes. We have records for most of SJF's children who were listed in censuses from 1850 - 1880.Mary C "Polly" Fincher is one of our brick walls & we hope that she married Evan Phillips & that we can locate a living descendant to verify this.
Some researchers say that SJF's ancestors lived in NY while others say that he was a descendant of Francis Fincher the Immigrant who came to PA with William Penn. The obit of one of SJF's daughters states that her father was born in Guilford County, NC & that "Both her paternal and maternal grandparents were born of Dutch parentage in Manhattan Island, N.Y., sometime in the sixties of the eighteenth century."We have been unable to verify that information. We do know that Finchers were located in Orange & Guilford & Mecklenburg Counties in NC starting as early as 1757.
Thanks again for your prompt assistance.
