1904: George Phillips jilted his bride-to-be, Miss Agnes Vowells
St. Louis, Mo., Aug. 31. - Despondent because she thought her sweetheart was not going to marry her, Miss Agnes Vowells, twenty-one years of age, of Covington, Ky., tried to end her life last night by swallowing laudanum. She was taken to the City Hospital, where her condition was pronounced serious.
Miss Vowells came to St. Louis about two weeks ago from Kentucky for the sole purpose of marrying George Phillips, whose brother married her sister. But when she arrived in the city Phillips decided to postpone the wedding for a few days so that he might set things in better shape, he said. When the appointed time came again he again postponed the wedding until yesterday, and when Miss Vowells got in readiness yesterday he declared that he had changed his mind and would never marry. Miss Vowells immediately went to the home of her sister and swallowed the poison.
