A portrait and biography of Samuel Phillips, pioneer Montana rancher, is included in "Montana, Its Story and Biography", Vol 3, pages 1063 and 1064 (portrait on un-numbered page preceding 1063).
In 1881, Samuel formed a partnership in the sheep business with T.J. Leard, on Willow Creek, three miles from what is now Lewistown, MT. Later he bought out T.J. Leard and became an individual owner of 7000-8000 sheep, and owning 11-12,000 acres of land on his ranch.He also raised Durham cattle.
In 1909, Samuel was one of the organizers of the Empire Bank and Trust Company of Lewistown, was on the first Board of Directors, and served as president for several years.Was president of Winnett State Bank; director of Winifred Bank; director of Banking Corporation of Helena; director of State Life Insurance Company of Great Falls, MT. Served one term as mayor of Lewistown, MT, and a member of the Board of County Commissioners for approx. 10 years.
On 23 Sep 1883, Helena, MT, Samuel married Miss Margaret Page, formerly of Watkins, NY.Children: John Holmes; May (Mrs. H.J. Bristoll); Delia; Mary (Mrs. H.C. Gorham); Robert James.
