I don't have a relationship to your ancestors, but my husband's grandfather was also James Madison Phillips of VA. It was a popular name in the late 1800 apparently, after the president.
I did some searches on ancestry, and found of interest that there were some matches. the 1920 census did show james born in LA and martha in AL. their children were bessie, elbe, george, lether, and zelion.but all other years (1900 and 1930) showed them both born in MS, and they lived in Lamar MS. Also his sep 12, 1918 draft registration in Lamar MS had wife martha and dob 4/20/1879. showed blue eyes and black hair, stout body build.
In 1900, a James M. Phillips living in freestone TX with cousin George and Maggie Daro, ages 58 and 49. Also in their house were Mary Ruffo, widowed sister in law, Richard Newman, nephew, Samuel Everett, boarder, and servants (both black) Mints Rodgers and Henry Mcdaniel. Don't know if this could be the same James as yours, but dates and birthplaces match.
in 1930 their children living in home were L.B., age 22, and Zelious, 15. Neighbor was Richard and Mary Hudson, ages 46 and 30, with children Mary, Isaac, George.
1920 census Hudsons also living nearby, this time a father Isaac and Son Isaac. Thought this might be Martha's parents, thus the possible naming of Phillips child Isaac?
If you have access to census records, you may find some more info.Hope this is of a little help. Julie Phillips
