Hi, Ron,
I thought it might interest you to know that I found a descendant of Rev George Phillips of Watertown, Massachusetts in the Sorenson Molecular Genealogical Foundation's database, and his DNA does not match your DNA. This person's pedigree back to Rev George Phillips is better documented than most.It goes as follows:
1. Christopher Phillips bc 1565 Norfolk Co England, d 3 Feb 1621 Norfolk Co, England, m unknown
2. Rev George Phillips b 1592/3 Norfolk Co England, d 1 July 1644 Watertown MA, m 1) unknown Sargent, m 2) widow Elizabeth Weldon
3. Rev Samuel Phillips b 1625 Suffolk Co England, d 22 April 1696 in MA, m Sarah Appleton
4. Rev George Phillips b 3 June 1664 Rowley, MA, d 17 June 1739 Long Island, Suffolk Co NY, m Sarah Hallett
5. George Phillips b 1 April 1698 Long Island, Suffolk Co NY, d 21 Nov 1771 Long Island, Suffolk Co NY, m Elizabeth Mills
6. Moses Phillips b 8 March 1742/3, d 29 Dec 1818 Orange Co NY, m Sarah Wisner
7. William Phillips b 9 Jan 1778 Orange Co NY, m Sarah Evertson
8. William Nitchie Phillips b 1 June 1820 Goshen NY, m Anna Matilda Ewing
9. Frederick Wisner Phillips b 13 Jan 1871 Knox Co IL, m Alta Josephine Marsh
Also, despite what Hackenbracht wrote in his book, I understand there is some doubt about whether Zerobabel, the son of Rev George Phillips, had any children.Apparently his probate indicates that he did not. Also, your ancestor Theophilus Phillips did not inherit any of Zerobabel's property.
As Hackenbracht indicated in his book, Zerobabel was born in 1632.Your Theophilus testified in a court case in 1662, so he was probably at least 16 years old in 1662.This means your Theophilus was probably born by 1646, when Zerobabel was only 14 years old.Since the average age of marriage for men in the Colonial period was 25, this means it is unlikely that Theophilus was the son of Zerobabel, unless Theophilus was illegitimate. To make matters worse, it appears that your Theophilus had two older brothers. While it is unlikely that Zerobabel had a son age age 14, it is almost physically impossible that he had sons at age 10 or 12.
Except for the DNA, most of the above information comes from David Blackwell, who is a distant cousin of yours and a real expert on this Phillips family. David thinks that the father of your Theophilus might have been a Capt Philip Phillips who sailed the Barque Mary.Of course, one DNA sample is not enough to prove that Rev George Phillips was not the grandfather of your Theophilus Phillips. We need to find more proven male Phillips descendants of Rev George and urge them to join the DNA project.
Sincerely,
