Hi, Anne,
Yes, I have studied the Zachariah Phillips who lived in Anson County NC and moved down to Wilkes County Georgia with his probable brother Joel Phillips around 1773. In 1774,Joel Phillips and Zechariah Phillips as citizens of the Town and Township of Wrightsborough, Georgia and its environs signed a petition disapproving resolutions drawn up in Savannah that were supportive of the Boston Tea Party. The Quaker community of Wrightsborough was located in the northern part of what is today the county of McDuffie, immediately south of Wilkes County. It appears that Joel and Zachariah Phillips were brothers and possibly Quakers from Anson Co, NC.If they were Quakers, they must have left the faith, because they both owned slaves and fought in the Revolution.I think it is likely that they were a part of the Regulator movement in NC, which was led by Herman Husband, a Quaker, and that they decided to move to GA with the Quakers to escape retribution in NC after the Regulator movement was crushed.
By 1785, Zachariah Phillips appears to have moved from Wilkes County GA to the part of Washington County GA that later became Greene County GA, because there is a deed dated28 May 1785 that describes him as Zachary Phillips of Washington County GA. From clues provided in the records of Wilkes, Washington and Greene Counties GA, I believe Zachariah had the following wives and children:
Marriage 1: Mary White born circa 1735 (because her first child was born circa 1753,) d. circa 1780. She was probably the daughter of Joseph White of Anson Co, NC. She probably married Zachariah circa 1753 in NC, because Zachariah Phillips registered upon entering GA in 1773, stating that he had a wife and five children from 3 years to 20 years old.Probable children of Zachariah Phillips and Mary White:
1. Joseph Phillips, b. ca. 1753, m. 1st Jean/Jane Walker, m. 2nd Betsey Unknown
2. Celia Ann Phillips, b. ca. 1755, m. William FitzPatrick (1744-1823) before 1773
3. Milly Phillips, b. ca 1766, m. Uziah Finley circa 1786
4. Ann Phillips, b. ca 1768, m. Benjamin Norris Finley 3 Feb 1786, Greene Co GA
5. Sarah Phillips, b. ca 1770, m. John Stroud 13 Oct 1787, Greene Co GA
6. Mary Phillips, b. ca 1772, m. George Clough circa 1790
Marriage 2: Rachel Wall b. circa 1750 (widow of Arthur Wall, sister of Sylvanus Walker). Married Zachariah Phillips circa 1780. Probable children of Zachariah Phillips and Rachel Walker Wall:
1. Vicey Phillips b. circa 1782, m. Henry Walker 19 May 1800 in Greene County, GA
2. Bathsheba Phillips b circa 1784, m. Josiah Patrick 30 Dec 1801 in Greene County, GA
3. Rachel Phillips, b. circa 1786, m. James Armor 17 Nov 1804 in Greene County, GA
4. Zachariah Phillips, b. circa 1788, m. Mary/Polly Medlock 1813 in Jasper Co, GA
I personally believe that the Zachariah Phillips who marriedCatherine Chaffin 14 May 1799 in Wilkes County GA was the son of Joel Phillips and his wife Elizabeth of Wilkes County GA.Joel did not leave a will, but his wife Elizabeth did, and she mentioned a son named Zachariah in her Wilkes County will proven in 1816.It might interest you to know that a descendant of Joel Phillips has joined the Phillips Worldwide DNA project and gotten his DNA tested. His results are shown under kit number 65713 at this link: http://wwww.familytreedna.com/public/PhillipsWorldwide/index..aspx?fixed_columns+onhttp://wwww.familytreedna.com/public/PhillipsWorldwide/index..aspx?fixed_columns+on These DNA results are VERY significant, because it places this descendant of Joel Phillips into a Phillips family that originated in Cecil County, Maryland. There has been much debate for years over whether Joel and Zachariah's family originated in Surry County VA or Cecil County, MD.The DNA indicates that they originated in Cecil County, MD.If you have a male Phillips cousin who would be willing to join the Phillips Worldwide DNA project, it would be very interesting to see if his DNA matches kit 65713.
Sincerely,
Nancy Kiser
