Jeff,
Since you are a straight line male Phillips descendant, you should consider joining the Phillips Worldwide DNA project.Several Phillips men with roots in Alabama have already been tested. Here is a link to the website: http://www.familytreedna.com/public/PhillipsWorldwidehttp://www.familytreedna.com/public/PhillipsWorldwide.
DNA studies only work very well thus far on straight line male descendants like you, so your DNA is a precious commodity. The DNA test is very painless and only requires swabbing your cheek with a cotton swab. You get a break with regard to the cost of the test if you participate in the Worldwide Phillips project. The tests themselves cost $99 for a 12 marker test, $169 for a 25 marker test, and $219 for a 37 marker test. A male Phillips cousin of mine is participating and he decided to go with the 25 marker test because it is more detailed and specific.
I believe that these DNA studies are the beginning of a brave new frontier in genealogy.
Sincerely,
Nancy Kiser
