The 1880 Census shows only two Phillips in Indiana with 1779 date of birth (1 year old in census). The below is the only one with a James as father and a Mary as mother. It indicates that james was born in NJ but both parents were born in England so they came to USA sometime before 1854. I'm not related, just trying to help.
