In the book "A Philen Heirloom", it states on page 54 that 2 suitors took out marriage licenses to wed Mary Culpepper (Allen Philen and Johnson Davis). Davis was the husband of Mary's late sister Nancy. Mary may have chosen him over Allen Philen since her sister left young children to be raised.

The author of the book feels that Allen Philen may have been related to Peter Philen (nephew, cousin, etc.), but no information on his parentage was available. The author felt that Allen was related since William Philen, Peter's son, gave his permission for his name to be put on the marriage bond as security.

I'm sorry if I wasn't able to add any new information on your relative.
