Hi Bridget,
After writing the first response, I realized that John
Philbrick is listed in the 1860 census as a single man
in Richland twp in Oswego Co: John M. Philbrick age
32 living with family of John S. Starks. His wife has
clearly died, but a man was not able
to take care of a family so the children were placed
with relatives. It was not uncommon for the mother to
die with infants still to be cared for and in this case a
man usually could not care for them. Only if he were
rich could he obtain help. But in this case John is
working in the field all day long for room and board and
only a little besides.
