Hi Scott,
We have found some information, and actually found a descendant...
Our Richard Anderson Fifer b.1840 in Salem, NJ had a brother named Edward Andrews Fifer, b.1842 in Phila, PA. They had other siblings: Neil, Elizabeth (Lizzie), and Hannah.
Their parents were Jesse Fifer b.abt.1815 and Rachel Andrews b.abt.1820.
Richard Anderson married Mary Ann Sickel, their son Edward Hicks Fifer b.1874 is named after a famous painter/artist from PA, named Edward Hicks. We are trying to find out if they may have been related in some way, or if they knew him or simply just admired his work.
Its possible that a branch of Jesse and Rachels may have moved to CA..
Does any of this sound familiar to you? We still have not come across definate info as to if they used the Phifer spelling..but did see on a census that the name was spelled Pifer. All other records indicate Fifer.
Mark F. Fifer, Sr.
