Hello

Joseph Phifer was a veteran of the American Revolutionary War. His service records are in the records of Mrs Jack Nelson, 3027 Pheasant Run, Houston, Texas 77077(Kingwood Chapter).
There is a Joseph Piper (Fifer) as having participated in the Battle of Guilford Court House on 15 March 1781.
[Henry County: A Proud Look Back; First National Bank of Bassett; copyright 1975; in DAR Library; Presented by General Joseph Martin Chapter on 23 August 1977.]
It should be noted that Guilford County is in North Carolina, just across the border from Henry County, Virginia.
There is a Joseph Piper listed as a member of Brice Martin's Company, under Colonel Abraham Penn; in his General Order signed 11 March 1781 preparatory to the Battle of Guilford Court House on 15 March 1781
[Names of Militiamen Who Marched To The Assistance Of General
Green At Guilford Court House; History of Patrick and Henry
Counties Virginia; by Virginia G. and Lewis G. Pedigo; Roanoke,
Virginia; 1933 (In DAR Library)]
[General Order Issurd by Col. Abram Penn, March 1781; in Virginia
Military Records; Genealogical Publishing Co.; Baltimore; 1985; In
DAR Library]
Since he died in 1833 he may have applied for a pension... but I found no record of a pension application at the National Archives.
In Henry County, Virginia, there is a Joseph Phifer first cited on 22 February 1787 and last cited on 23 April 1818.
This Joseph Phifer was b. abt 1774 (?) in Henry County, Virginia; married Judith Meredith and had twelve children, including a John (b. abt 1790)
There are numerous entries in the Henry County Court Records regarding his land transactions and service as a witness in court or as a certifier of a death.
There is a James Phifer first cited on 28 April 1786 and last cited on 13 February 1805. [Possibly a brother of Joseph? There may have been a James who married Jane Turner and died in the War of 1812]. Also the early records of Henry County mentiom a Jacob Phifer.
England is cited as his birthplace based on the note filed under R-16.
Will of Joseph Phifer dated 12 January 1833; Henry County, Virginia; Will Book 4; p. 78.... subsequently produced in court on 12 May 1834.
Judith Meredith is in my database as follows:
BIRTH: ABT 1758 in Henry County, Virginia
MARRIAGE: Joseph Phifer, BEF 1780, Henry County, Virginia.
DEATH:
NOTES:
BIRTH: LDS Ancestral File v4.19
MARRIAGE: LDS Ancestral File v4.19
DEATH:
I show her father as Bradley Meredith
BIRTH: ABT 1735
NOTES:
Bradley Meredith appears only in the 1790 Census of Henry County which may imply that he died before the 1800 Census.
24 March 1780
Dorothy Meredith came into court and made oath that she is in danger of her life, which is threatened by her husband, Bradley Meredith. It is therefore ordered that the Sheriff take Bradley Meredith into custody until he gives bond in the sum of 1000 pounds and his security in the sum of 500 pounds cash.

Book #1 & #2 (1777-1782); pp 97-98; Virginia Room, Fairfax Library]
In addition I have twelve children listed for Joseph and Judith... let me know if you want that list.
I wish I had better source references than the LDS Ancestral File, which unfortunately does not indicate its primary source.
I hope this helps...
Fred
