I am wondering if anyone could help me, I am having a problem trying to figure out the birthdate and birthplace of my gg grandmother, Jane Birch. She married Ransom Phelps my gg grandfather in Will, IL, however every date I find is different.
I have had a very difficult time in trying to figure out which information is right.
The marriage record states Jane Birch was born in WI in 1832 and Ransom Phelps was born in NY in 1822.
The 1860 census states Jane was born in IL about 1832.
The 1900 census states Jane was born in IN in 1835, was a widow and her father was listed as born in VA, with her mother born in NC.
I am wondering if the 1900 census was the correct data. When Ransom married her he was 10 years older according to the records of 1848. If this is the case he would have been about 25 or 26 years old and she about 13 years old. I am wondering if they may have hidden her real birthdate and place of birth and said she was 16. Then once he died and she filled out the census, she put down the correct information. This is just a thought, but it does solve the mystery of the conflicting data.
The 1900 census has a lot more information than the other records. Both census records were taken in Romine, Marion, Illinois. Does anyone have this info?
