I recently purchased a first edition of the two volume set of the Phelps Family of America. This is a leather bound edition with gold guilding and was apparently ordered for a William J. Phelps of Newton Center Ma. There is a signature page in Vol 1, which bears his signature and a date of 1917. On page 1658 of volume II, there is a listing for # 660, Nathaniel Hawthorne. I was curious what the connection to the Phelps family was, as I see no obvious relation from the write up in the book. Apparently, William J. Phelps # 959 on page 1681, b. Wendell, MA, Aug. 9, 1853, d. November 1, 1935 Newton MA (the death date is hand written in, had a son George H. b. May 20, 1883. The autograph page indicates that William had intended the book to be handed down through his family. If anyone knows more about George or his descendants, I would like them to know the where abouts of the book, as there are other hand written updates in this section. One other question, what would be a fair price to pay for the two volume set such as this with some slight binding issues? I payed $150. Thanks, -Dan Notify Administrator about this message?
