Michael “Mike” O’Neil was born in Ireland (specific location unknown) between 1790-1800; it is not known exactly when or where he died but it was after 1880 and it was probably in St. Louis Co., Mo. He was married to ____. He was listed as a widower by the 1880 census; however, his wife was not listed on the 1860 census with him, so it is speculated that he was a widower by/before 1860. Michael immigrated to the USA and was in St. Louis County by the 1860 census. No other information is available at this time about Michael O’Neil.

Based on the information of the 1860 and 1880 St. Louis, Mo. census, it is assumed, but not proven, that the children of Michael O’Neil included the following:
-Mathew O’Neil born about 1 Oct 1833 in Ireland and died 15 Jan 1903 in St. Louis, Mo. See below for additional information.
-Petter (spelling of the census; probably is Peter) O’Neil born about 1835 in Ireland. He was a widow in the 1880 census. No additional information.
-Thomas O’Neil born about 1838 in Ireland. No additional information.
-Mike O’Neil born about 1842 in Ireland. No additional information.

According to his death certificate, Mathew (spelling is always Mathew, but could be Matthew) O’Neil was born 1 Oct 1833 in Ireland and died at 2103 Breman Ave., St. Louis, Missouri on 15 Jan 1903. Information from the death certificate of their daughter says that he married Mary L. Whalen (question whether of not the correct spelling could be Phalen). It is not known if Mathew O’Neil and Mary L. Whalen married in the USA or in Ireland before emigrating. Mary L. Whalen was born between 1830-1840 in Ireland. She died on 3 Nov 1904 at 2103 Breman Ave., St. Louis, Missouri. Based on the census information, they emigrated from Ireland prior to 1860; the 1900 census says that they emigrated in 1854, but no proof has been found at this time. Per the census information, they lived in St. Louis County or City from at least 1860 until their deaths. Mathew O’Neil was a shoemaker.

Children of Mathew O’Neil and Mary L. Whalen:
-James O’Neil born about 1854 in Ireland or Missouri; died in April of 1936. He did not marry. He is buried in Calvary Cemetery, St. Louis, Mo.
-Michael O’Neil born about 1868 in Missouri and died shortly before 27 Aug 1904. He is buried in Calvary Cemetery, St. Louis, Mo.
-Elizabeth O’Neil born on 3 Sept 1865 in St. Louis, Mo.; died on 12 Sept 1955 in Shillington, Berks Co., Pa. She married (1) Joseph James Hallissey before 1885. Joseph Hallissey was born in 1863 in Illinois and died on 30 May 1893 in St. Louis, Mo. She married (2) William F. Haney, Sr. about 1896. William F. Haney, Sr. was born 13 Jan 1856 and died 2 Dec 1917. They are all buried in Calvary Cemetery, St. Louis, Mo.

Notes: The records for this family are sometimes spelled as O’Neil; other times, they are spelled as O’Neill.
