The world's first paid passenger flight left St. Petersburg on New Year's Day 1914. Tony Jannus piloted; former mayor A.C. Pheil paid $400 for his seat. "The chilling winds whistled through the speeding plane and we both had to tighten up our garments," Pheil said.
