Hi Sandra and Cousin Kristin!!

Sandra, I have a feeling that you may be trying to connect to the wrong Jacob Mann. Do you have documentation orf proof to show your Mann is the one who married the Peyton girls?

There are several things that make me feel this way.

First, In Virginia Genealogies, Hayden states Jesse Peyton said the children of William Peyton were scattered through the western country and lost to sight. To me, he is saying they all left Nicholas County and likely Kentucky. Granted, it is a blanket statement, but wouldn't he have stated it differently if some remained in Nicholas County?

Secondly, the info you supplied on the Mann children does not match the info for Jacob Man on he 1840 Nichoas County, Kentucky census. This is the only Jacob Man or Mann shown on the 1840 Kentucky census.

The census shows the following for Jacob Man. To simplify, I don't include Jacob and Mary.

(2) males under 5
(1) male 5-9
(1) male 10-14
(1) female under 5
(1) female 10-14

Given your info, the census would have shown--

(1) male 5-9---David
(1) male 10-14---Elias
(1) female under 5---Angeline
(1) female 5-9---Catherine
(1) female 10-14---Mahalthlin

There was a second Jacob Mann in the 1830 census. Given that there is only one Jacob in 1840 and the children you mention were all born before 1840 and are living with other families in 1850, could that be your Jacob?

Thirdly, You say David was born in 1832 and Catherine in 1835. Jacob Mann and Mary Peyton were married on April 22, 1835. They could not have been the parents of David or Catherine.

Lastly, many of the Peytons went to Missouri. Samuel and Morris did and probably William as well. Several of the others went to Indiana.

I believe Jacob and Mary Mann also went to Missouri. While I have no proof yet, the following 1850 census record in Cooper County, Missouri certainly could be them. Everyone listed is shown as having been born in Kentucky. It's important here to remember there was only one Jacob in the 1840 Kentucky census.

Jacob--48
Mary--43
Peter--22
Morris--18
Amanda--14
Jesse--12
Thomas--11
Columbus--9
Mary--8
John--6

On the next page, I found,
James P Lewis--26 from Missouri
Phebe Lewis--20 from Kentucky
John W Lewis--1 from Missouri
James H--2 months from Missouri

Jacob and James P Lewis are gone in the 1860 Cooper County census and Phebe Lewis is living with Mary Mann. Obviously, Phebe is Mary's daughter.

Peter was the name of Jacob's father, Morris, Phebe and Jesse were names of some Mary Peyton's younger siblings.

For your sake, I hope I'm wrong, but I don't think so. Perhaps you can get on the right track now if I'm right.

Jim
