I haven't done Peyton research for a number of months (we just moved from Florida to Texas) and don't remember if I have discussed this before. On Ancestry.com Bute County, NC Court Minutes has several things listed for 16 February 1775 that are of interest to my husband's Thomas Peyton family. Thomas Peyton of Granville Co., NC(1765-1833 died Morgan Co., AL) and his first wife (perhaps Rachel Rogers, but not really sure who his first wife was) had 2 daughters: Sarah Peyton Kimbell and Nancy Stuart Johnson. (These daughters were listed on his will filed in Morgan Co., AL). Sarah Peyton's husband was Nathan Kimbell (b. 1786, grandson of a Benjamin Kimbell, b. 1728 and Mary Ransom b. 1727 --Mary Ransom was the d/o a James Ransom b. 1704). Nathan and Sarah Peyton Kimbell had a daughter named Sarah Frances Kimbell who married a William Q. Sewell b. 1819 (s/o John L. Sewell and Charity Lancaster). With all of the above information in my files, I was curious to note that in Bute Co., NC on 16 February 1775 there was listed the following: "A Deed from Benjamin Seawell Jun'r to Green Hill was proved byt he oath of Josiah Reddick a Witness thereto and on Motion the same is Ordered to be registered." (I don't know the relationship between this Benjamin Seawell and John L. Sewell though). Even more interesting is the following paragraph " Robert Peyton, Jenkins Devenny, John Macon, William Powell, Jesse Mabry, Richard Ransom, Thomas Leach, John Powell, Saml'l Harris, Josiah Reddick, Benjamin Kimbell and George Williams. The Above Jurors Sworn and find the bond not paid, Verdict for f.7.8.6 with Interest from this Date till paid and Costs." These jurors are also listed for February 17th). I wonder who this Robert Peyton was? There are other references in Bute Co., NC court minutes to a Robert Peyton. "A Deed from Benjamin Rush to Robert Stringfellow was proved by the oath of Robert Peyton and Aug. 11, 1774) On August 9th, 1775, Robert Peyton is listed as one of a number of folks ordered to lay out a road. On Feb. 13, 1775 the hands of several men, including Robert Peyton were ordered to lay out a road. On Nov. 12, 1777, Robert Peyton was part of a Grand Jury, which also included a Jesse Hunter. I haven't been able to make a connection between this Jesse Hunter and Phereba Hunter (wife of Joseph Lane b. 1761), but a son of Joseph and Phereba was a witness to the will of our Thomas Peyton of Morgan Co., AL). I understand that Benjamin Rush was the father of the Ann Rush who married a Robert Peyton, so I'm guessing that his was the Robert Peyton who was listed on these Bute Co., NC records. I think I remember that Peyton Society researchers had recently changed who they thought was the father of this Robert Peyton and I am not remembering what the latest conclusion was?? Can anyone from the Peyton Society refresh my memory?? We also know from DNA testing that our branch of Peytons doesn't match up with any other known Peytons. Hum.... Still this is a curious match up of names to me. I throw it out again for future research. I see that Edna Barney has listed that our Thomas Peyton (and his sisters, Elizabeth Peyton Duncan and Mary Peyton Hays) were the children of this Robert Peyton and Ann Rush. AND I remember that someone from the Peyton Society gave me a good reason for why this is probably not true. But this is still a curious match up of names to me. I wish I could search around some in those NC archives to see what else we might be able to turn up. I know there were several Robert Peytons, and several Thomas Peytons and that the information regarding these guys has gotten confused. But those who are descendants of this Thomas Peyton are still wondering who his father might have been. (For those new to this Peyton research, This isn't the Thomas Peyton who was the brother of the twins, Ephraim and John Peyton--who ended up in Tennessee--and there was a 3rd Thomas Peyton who lived in this time period also---so it can all get very confusing.) If anyone ever gets to dig more in NC records for Peytons, please let me know. Thanks!!! Notify Administrator about this message?
