Thanks for all the information. My line is John's younger brother James Petty (married to Martha).

The Petty papers were a newsletter published first by Jim Petty and then Barbara McGee for Petty researchers by 1960 or so. We have urged Barb to put the issues on a dvd and recover her expense from those who would like access to the decades of information on the early Hubert Petty family. The good research on our Hubert Petty comes from those who banded together to locate and publish this information starting at least in the 1950s. I am an lucky beneficiary of their good work.

Barb and now her daughter also maintain the Pettygenealogy.com site. I intend to go these and see what prior researchers have contributed on the interesting issue you raise.

Research on women in the early 1700s is very difficult. I am still seeking the maiden name of our Martha who married James Petty in Orange County VA. Thanks for talking the time and care to get this right.

Sharolyn Petty Wood

P.S. Those Petty siblings all nameed their children after each other. Don't know if that helps or not.
