The connection between the Pettus and Coleman families was established in at least two ways. Thomas Pettus, son of Thomas Pettus, burgess of Lunenburg County, Virginia, and his wife, Amey Walker, had a daughter Martha who married John Coleman, son of Cluverious Coleman of Mecklenburg County, Virginia, in 1799. In 1802 David W. Pettus, son of David Walker Pettus of Lunenburg County, and his wife Ann Whitworth, married Elizabeth Boswell, daughter of John Iverson Boswell and his wife Mary Coleman. David Walker Pettus, Sr., was the son of Thomas Pettus, burgess, mentioned above. I don't know how Mary was related to other Colemans. Perhaps someone can enlighten me. David and Elizabeth had sons, Cluverious Coleman Pettus, Thomas Coleman Pettus, and Joseph Cluverious Pettus.
