Most researchers, including myself, believe that Evan Ragland married Susanna Pettus, daughter of Stephen Pettus of New Kent County, Virginia. That said, after 38 years of research in the Virginia and English records, I have found no actual evidence to prove that Ragland's wife was a Pettus or that she was the daughter of Stephen Pettus. Perhaps someone can fill that gap for me with some documentary evidence (I am already familiar with the Ragland book). A further difficulty is that of proving Stephen's ancestry. A related problem is figuring out how many distinct Stephen Pettuses or Pettises were living in Virginia during the 17th C. I believe that there were two Stephen Pettuses and one or two Stephen Pettises. In recent years, after trying various hypotheses, I have now come to the conclusion that Stephen, presumed father of Susanna, was the son of Col. Thomas Pettus. Both men owned land on Ware Creek in New Kent County. Another Stephen Pettus, son of Thomas Pettus II of Littletown plantation, eventually settled in Hanover County, Virginia. Col. Pettus, of course, was the son, born in 1599, of Thomas Pettus, mayor of Norwich, England, in 1614. Neither Stephen Pettus was the same person as the Stephen Pettis who was in Virginia by 1637. Col. Pettus did not marry before coming to Virginia. He had two sons, Stephen and Thomas II. The basis for my assertions will appear in my forthcoming book on the Pettus family.
