I now have 36 pages (copies) of notarized 17th-C. Dutch documents concerning Thomas Pettus II of Virginia and his mission to Holland to secure money from the estate of his wife's deceased grandmother. Some of the pages bear Thomas's original signature. So far, I have been unable to find anyone who can translate the documents for me. Finding someone who can read Dutch is not the issue, rather finding someone who can read 17th C. Dutch handwriting is the problem. I have tried the Dutch Embassy and the University of Virginia. Any suggestions?
As these documents could impact my biography of Thomas, which is in chapter 6, I can't assume that the page numbering past that point will remain fixed, which means that I can't continue indexing beyond that point until I have the translations.
In the meantime, I have continued highlighting words and phrases that will be indexed in the following chapters. I am now working on chapter 14, which is over halfway through the book.
A few days ago, I discovered that I had never come to a definite conclusion on the identity of the wife of George Terry of Charlotte County, Virginia. Apparently, she was closely related to John Pettus of the same county, because John deeded land to George "for love and affection." John was the son of Stephen Pettus of Hanover County, Virginia, and his wife Mary (?), daughter of Capt. George Dabney of King William County. Capt. Dabney made his will in 1729. John died in 1781. George's will was proved in 1803.
Some writers claim that George was John's brother-in-law. It seems more likely to me that she was John's daughter. Does anyone know the name of George's wife and how she was related to George. I need evidence!
