Hello, Steve:

I am a descendent of William Littell Pettit, and I found your contact info in what Bill Harrison has compiled. I just read your comment that John Pettit's forebars were a mystery to you.

I have been in touch with Debbie Poythress-Concepcion (a researching cousin) who told me her cousin WIlliam Foley said John Pettit had a Cherokee ancestors. Woodford County KY, where John was supposedly born was certsainly Chaerokee country. I've read Woodford COunty used to be Augusta, Cty. VA or Bourbon Cty. KY.

John and Tinie were married in NJ and had 2 children before moving to Indiana where William Lyttel was born. Rita Stahn thinks John had a Canada connection. Maybe John made his way back to NJ at some point (where perhaps his g'pa came from) and met Tinie there.

Thanks for your time. I would welcome any observations you can provide.

All the best.

Kate Burke

PS Were you perhaps at Duke? I am a faculty member at the University of VIrginia in Charlottesville.
