I posted on the forum several years ago looking for information on Mathias Pettit (my wife's great grandfather) that was born in 1828 in (West) Virginia. There are a couple of other Mathias Pettit's from PA from that era that were well documented, but my wife ancestor was not one of those. We did know that his father had come from PA but nothing else. I have recently been able to make the connection to who his parents were and in doing so the full Pettit family tree going back to Thomas and Henri Pettit. I have put the family tree an ancestry.com and decided to post the basic information here just in case it helps someone else:

My wife (Daisy Pettit) was born in 1950 and her parents were Martin Mathias Pettit (b. 1911 in Braxton Co. WV) and Lela Stump.

Martin's father was Charles Sherman Pettit (b. 1869 in Braxton Co. WV)

Charles' father was Mathias Pettit. Mathias Pettit was born about 1828 in (West) Virginia (specific location unconfirmed, but would have been either Monongalia Co. or Harrison Co. He was listed by name in the 1850 Federal Census record for Harrison Co. (West) Virginia and was married to Helen M. Criss in Marion County in April 1856, He and Helen were listed in the 1860 Census in Marion Co. as having 3 children with the oldest (Sarah) being 2 years old. Helen Criss was born in 1832 in Virginia (now WV) and was the daughter of Lewis and Sarah Criss and her Criss ancestors came to American from Prussia, Germany in the mid-1700’s. Both Mathias and Helen list their birthplace as Virginia (now WV) in the 1860 and later Census. Mathias Pettit is listed in the West Virginia Civil War Almanac and on the web site for the 7th West Virginia Infantry in the Civil War as having served for the Union in the 7th West Virginia Infantry, Company C for 3 months (4/9/65 – 7/1/65) during the end of Civil War (the war officially ended in May 1865 with the surrender of the confederacy). Sometime after the Civil War Mathias and Helen moved to Braxton County, WV and purchased 100 acres on Bear Run, Braxton Co., WV from Felix J. Sutton, on Jan. 2, 1868. They are listed, starting with the 1870 Census, in Braxton County and again in the 1880 Census where Mathias lists his father’s birthplace as Pennsylvania. Mathias and Helen had 9 children: Sarah Matilda, George W., Philadelphia, Cordelia, William N., Carrie Belle, Ulysses G., Harrison, and Charles S.

Mathias was the son of Azariah Pettit (b. 1768 or 1769) and his wife Rebecca (b. about 1774). Lived in in Greene Co. PA in the late 1700's and by some accounts was either born in Newton, Sussex Co., NJ or in PA. He and Rebecca moved to Monongalia Co. (West) Virginia between 1810 and 1819 where their names appear in a count record in Monogalia Co. in 1819. They appear in the 1930 Census for Harrison Co. (West) Virginia and included in the household in a child under the age of 5. By the 1840 Census for Harrison Co. Rebecca is now the head of the household (apparently Azariah had died)and there was a child between the ages of 10 and 15. By the 1850 Census, Marion Co. (West) Virginia has been created from parts of Harrison and Monongalia Counties and Mathias was listed as the head of the household (as the owned the house) and Rebecca now listed by name as living in the household.

Azariah was the son of Issac Pettit (b. 1730) and Margaret Gooden (b. 1725).

Issac was the son of Nathaniel Pettit II (b. about 1676) and Elizabeth Heath.

Nathaniel II was the son of Nathaniel Pettit (b. 1645 or 1646) and Mary Bailey.

Nathaniel was the son of Thomas Pettit (b. 1610) and Christian Mellows

Thomas was the son of Henri Pettit (b. about 1580)
