Jacob and Andrew Petit of Rockford, IL

I am looking for information on/origins of/descendants of Jacob Petit who was born about 1829-32 in France. He was apparently of Memphis, TN in 1861 when he fathered a son, Frank A., with Mary Elizabeth Smith (she b. 1843 in Ohio). I don't know if they were married or not. Mary married William H. Moore in New York City abt. 1867/8. Jacob showed up next in the 1870 Census of Rockford, Winnebago Co., IL. He was married (Emily, b. abt. 1837 in IL) and had a dau, Alice (b. 1879; d. 1974; mar. Herman O. Hansen). Jacob remained in Rockford and was found in the 1880 and 1900 census. He died sometime bet. 1901-1905. There was also an Andrew Petit living in Rockford at the same time and also a native of France. Andrew was born abt. 1838 and mar. Agnes Knudson in 1867. They had two sons, Stanley Joseph (b. 1877; d. 1954 Chicago; m. Ida Mae Garber) and Harvey (b. abt. 1872).
I would like to know if Jacob and Andrew were related. Also, what were the circumstances of Jacob's time in Tennessee. The son born there is the line I have been tracing back and this Petit line is a surprise because he either was adopted by his step-father or just took his surname.
Any help would be appreciated.
