According to the census records, she was listed as Serina. I have questions concerning my g-grandfather's parentage, and went to Russell Co to check the records. However, I arrived late in the afternoon only to find that Russell had split and the Auburn District records would be found in Lee County Probate office, and did not have time to check there. I did find the marriage application for Wilson B Pettis & S. A. E. Locke, however, dated 1838. I am pretty sure that he is the father of Jon Alvin Pettis, who was born in 1839 in Russell County, Auburn District, and entered the Civil War (CSA) in Russell County, Auburn District. They are also listed on a couple of censuses as living next door to each other - even though on one census they listed the oldest son as "James A" with a younger son "James B". Since census takers put their own spiel on the spelling of names - when you can read them - sometimes you have to second-guess tha actual spelling (i.e. John Alvin's wife. Decella Jane. was listed as Lucinda, Drucilla and Decella).
Maybe this will help some, and if you have any other information, I would appreciate it.
Martha English Johnson
