Pettis Family Genealogy Forum

I am searching for the family of Martin (Marcus) Pettis. It was passed down that he was born about 1839 in Winslow, Canada, but there isn't any Winslow Canada. I recently found a descendant of one of his daughters in Michigan who said her grandmother said that Martin's father came from Manitoba, Canada and married a Potowatame Indian woman and then later moved to Michigan. Apparently his father died and his mother remarried and the first records I found for Martin was when he joined the Civil War in Illinois. When the war was over, he returned to Illinois and married Frances Anna Shank. At one point, at least in 1878, he was living around Battle Creek, Michigan. I believe he may have had brothers and/or sisters near that area. Civil war records list him as Marcus(Marquiss) Petteice (which my family knew him by), but it is also listed as Pettice and Pettis. His daughter that lived in Michigan stated the name was Martin Pettis. I have a copy of the family Bible, but it doesn't list any family for him other than his children. We were told he was of French descent. ispshark@msn.com Irene
