This post builds on the info in message #1407, "Pettegrew brothers: Daniel, David, Nathan; VT & Dearborn Co. IN; 1818-50s." William Pettegrew was father of the three brothers who emigrated to Dearborn Co. IN from Windsor Co. VT. David, in his autobiographical account, said his father was b. 1752 in CT, and died Oct. 1816 in VT . See research Note #1, below. A DAR record gives the birthdate as 1 Aug 1852, but has the death in Nov. 1816. See Note #2. In any case, William was dead by Dec. 1816 because I found a notice published then, about settling his estate. See note #3. See note #4 for an interesting post about his possible burial site. David said his father William was a traveling preacher and strict Methodist. This seems to have influenced William's choice of biblical names for his 4 sons (Daniel, Nathaniel, David, Nathan) by his first wife. She was Phebe nee Hardy, but appears to have previously married a Joseph Nixon. See Note #5 for her family info. The DAR record also refers to her as Phoebe Nixon. The DAR record gives his second wife as Mary Alden. William and his son David appear to have had the same father-in-law, John Alden. Mary was an older half-sister to David's wife Elizabeth Alden. One other thing I have for William is the 1815 newspaper ad in Note #6, about westward emigration. Some VT census records are in Note #7. There are many versions of William's family line on worldconnect Verify any info there by other sources as there is often much error in those records. My conclusions in the above summary are speculative. You need to find documentation to confirm or disprove my conclusions, before incorporating this info into your family tree. Because these conclusions are speculative, no one has my permission to disseminate this info by means of the internet or by other media, especially on Worldconnect, gencircles, familysearch.org or any other such internet database. My research and my conclusions can contain errors and probably do. They are given only as an aid to further your own research. (A correction: in message #1407 I referred to another post, "Obit: Mary Pettigrew Keyes, 1813-1913; VT, Syria & IL." The accurate message number for that post is #1330. Mary was William's daughter by his second wife Mary Alden. Message #1331 is "Obit: Darius E. Pettegrew, 1833-1902; IN & IL." Darius was William's grandson by Nathan, son of William and his first wife Phebe Hardy.) ******************** Research Notes *************************************** Note #1. Autobiographical account of David Pettegrew: "An Enduring Legacy, Volume Three" David Pettegrew Early Convert to the Church Member of the Mormon Battalion Captain of the Silver Greys, S.L. City Major of the Utah Militia Chaplain, House of Representatives, Utah Territory Bishop of the Tenth Ward, SLC p 663-5: "I was born in the town of Weatherfield, Windsor County, state of Vermont, in the year 1791. My father, William Pettegrew, was born in the town of Woodbury, Connecticut, in the year 1752. My grandfather, Alexander Pettegrew, emigrated from Scotland to New England; all I know of him is what I remember hearing my father say of him. He was a soldier in the old French War. He had two sons, William and Stephen. My father was a soldier in the Revolutionary War. I heard him say much of the suffering and hardships during the war, such as the Indian expedition from West Point to the Conasee Country, and the Battle of Monmouth, and many other of the mighty excursions which were made in the Revolutionary War under the great Washington. My father had four sons: Daniel, Nathaniel, David and Nathan; and three daughters: Betsy, Lydia and Sally. My mother died and my father married again and had by his second wife four sons: John, Thomas, Alden and William; and one daughter, Mary. My father was a very strict professor of the Methodist Church and a traveling preacher. I remember that he spoke much about the prophets and the fulfillments of the prophecies. He died in October 1816. From: Tucky Sancibrian <tucky@sccoast.net To: VERMONT-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [VT-L] Gravestone Provide Clues to the Past Date: Friday, June 02, 2000 2:24 PM The following is an article that was in the May 23, 2000 edition of the Barre/Montpelier Times Argus. Written by Melissa MacKenzie it originally was in the Rutland Herald. Weathersfield-The small Weatherbee Cemetery, framed by an old stone wall, is tucked behind a row of trees. Pink creeping phlox and wild, columbine bloom in the grass among the graves. The 34 gravestones are illegible for the most part. Some are broken. A fragment chiseled in the remains of a headstone reads "is no safe retreat." Nobldy has been buried here since 1814. Many town residents don't know of the Weatherbee Cemetery's existence, or that there are actually 13 cemeteries in the town, of which only one - the Aldrich/Upham Cemetery on Wethersfield Center Road - clearly belongs to the town. The other 12 are either privately owned or are managed by their own cemetery associations. On Sunday, in spite of rainy weather, the Weathersfield Historical Society, led by archivist Edith Hunter, hosted a guided tour to four cemeteries: Weathebee Cemetery on Weatherbee Hill Road, Greenbush Cemetery on Route 106, the Plain Cemetery on Plains Road, and the Aldrich/Upham Cemetery. About 25 town residents, joined by several descendants of colonial Weathersfield families, explored the cemeteries in search of history as well as confirmation of family stories. At Weatherbee, following a written request to the historical society to try and locate the whereabouts of WILLIAM Pettegrew, an early settler, the entire group joined in searching the indentations of 30-some moss-covered stones for the initials, "W.P". Perkinsville resident Becky Tucker found him first. Cheered on by Weathersfield residents Ginger Wimberg and Evelyn Beebe, Tucker scratched away at the stone, scraping off enough lichen to expose PETTEGREW'S initials. -------------- Note #5.
