Refer to message #1401, "James Joshua Pettigrew b. 1832, m. Alcinda M. Anderson 1850s", for part 1 of this discussion, and #1402, "Ezekiel Pettegrew m. Emeline Beach 1827 Dearborn Co. IN," for part 2. Ezekiel was the son of Daniel Pettegrew of VT.

My conclusions in the following summary are speculative. You need to find documentation to confirm or disprove my conclusions, before incorporating this info into your family tree. Because these conclusions are speculative, no one has my permission to disseminate this info by means of the internet or by other media, especially on Worldconnect, gencircles, familysearch.org or any other such internet database. My research and my conclusions can contain errors and probably do. They are given only as an aid to further your own research.

My research notes follow the summary. They contain additional, important information, so study them also.

Daniel, David, and Nathan Pettegrew, brothers from Weathersfield, Windsor Co. VT, moved first to Hamilton Co. OH then to Dearborn Co. IN. One brother, David, became a Mormon bishop. His autobiographical account begins with their origins and migration; an excerpt of that account is in Note #1. David and Nathan left VT first, possibly as early as 1817; records show they purchased Dearborn Co. IN land in 1818. See Note #2.

Daniel probably left VT later than his brothers, as David mentions traveling west with brother Nathan only and their wives. By 1820, however, Daniel was in Hamilton Co. OH, and in Dearborn Co. IN by 1830. See the census records in Note #3. In David's account Daniel is listed first of William's sons, and in the 1830 census he is older than David and Nathan. Possibly, as oldest brother, Daniel stayed behind in VT to settle his father's affairs after the death of William in late 1816, while David and Nathan went west ahead of him.

I found an interesting 1815 newspaper ad that shows William was well aware of the opportunities awaiting in the west. See Note #4. William's interest shows that the brothers' westward move, soon upon the death of their father, was probably no sudden impulse, but may have been long-anticipated.

David embraced Mormonism in 1832. That year, against his eldest brother's objections, David sold his Indiana farm and removed his family to near Independence, Jackson County MO, a crude village proclaimed Zion by Joseph Smith. The family suffered all the persecutions and hardships of the Mormons there, moving on to (now) Nauvoo IL when the Mormons were expelled from MO in 1839. After the death of Joseph Smith in 1844, David and his family moved again, to Utah territory with Brigham Young . Much can be found about David through Google searches.

Daniel married in VT to Phebe. I now can confirm that Daniel was the father of Ezekiel, also of John and Sarah, thanks to finding an abstract of Daniel's 1835 Dearborn Co. will. See Note #5. The will was witnessed by Ezekiel's father-in-law, Job Beach.

Daniel and family were in the Cincinnati OH area in the 1820 census, but had moved to Dearborn Co IN by the 1830 census. Ezekiel, however, remained in OH at least long enough for his first two sons to be born there, John H. in 1831 and James in 1832-4. In Oct. 1835, Ezekiel bought government land in Dearborn Co. IN, 40 acres in the same section as his father's 160 acres. See Note #2, part 2. His next son, named after his father Daniel, was b. there 4 Jan 1836.

It appears Ezekiel did not stay in Dearborn Co. long after his father's death. By 1837 he was in Coles County IL and is listed as officiating at several marriages there. See Note #6. Thus, the following Pettegrew in the same county is likely Ezekiel:

1840 census: E Pettegrew Coles Co, Illinois (just west of Edgar Co)
1m/1835-40, 2m/1830-35, 1m/1800-10; 1f/1835-40, 1f/1830-35, 1f/1820-25, 1f/1800-10, 1f/1780-90

Here the oldest female is likely his widowed mother Phebe. The sons are John H., James, and Daniel.

Ezekiel, and possibly his brother John also, bought government land in Coles County IL. See Note #2, part 3. Possibly their mother Phebe remarried there, but I don't know that for sure. I just have this marriage record:
http://www.angelfire.com/oh5/earpconnections/colescountymarriages.html
Nov. 12, 1843        Williams, James        Pettigrew, Phebe        Dunbar, Henry C. , JP

See further info about Ezekiel in Genforum message #1402.

Return now to Nathan Pettegrew, the last of the VT brothers who settled in Dearborn Co. IN. He bought land in Dearborn Co. in 1818, and again in '25, '32, and '37. See Note #2, parts 1 and 2. Nathan supposedly married twice: Mary (Polly) Roberts and Mary Chandler. I haven't found marriage records for either. He appears in the 1850 census, age 57, so his birthyear was likely 1792-93. With him was wife Mary and several children. Also living with them was Rachel Chandler, so I conjecture that wife Mary was Mary Chandler. See census, Note #3. After 1850, Nathan moved from Dearborn Co. IN to IL. There is an 1855 land record for him in McLean Co. IL. See Note #2. Some researchers have said Nathan died in Princeton, Bureau Co., IL, 10 August 1855, but I have no proof of that. Several of his children lived in Bureau Co. IL for many years. See census, Note #3.

For an obit of one of Nathan's sons, see Genforum message #1331: "Obit: Darius E. Pettegrew, 1833-1902; IN & IL."

The VT Pettegrew brothers had a half-sister who also moved west, Mary. She married Rev. N.A. Keyes. In 1855 they settled in Bureau Co. IL. See Genforum message #1331: "Obit: Mary Pettigrew Keyes, 1813-1913; VT, Syria & IL."

I will put some bits of info about the patriarch William in a later post.

p 663-5:

"In the year of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, eighteen hundred and forty, I, David Pettegrew, commenced to write somewhat of a history of my life.
I was born in the town of Weatherfield, Windsor County, state of Vermont, in the year 1791. My father, William Pettegrew, was born in the town of Woodbury, Connecticut, in the year 1752. My grandfather, Alexander Pettegrew, emigrated from Scotland to New England; all I know of him is what I remember hearing my father say of him. He was a soldier in the old French War. He had two sons, William and Stephen. My father was a soldier in the Revolutionary War. I heard him say much of the suffering and hardships during the war, such as the Indian expedition from West Point to the Conasee Country, and the Battle of Monmouth, and many other of the mighty excursions which were made in the Revolutionary War under the great Washington.
My father had four sons: Daniel, Nathaniel, David and Nathan; and three daughters: Betsy, Lydia and Sally. My mother died and my father married again and had by his second wife four sons: John, Thomas, Alden and William; and one daughter, Mary.
My father was a very strict professor of the Methodist Church and a traveling preacher. I remember that he spoke much about the prophets and the fulfillments of the prophecies. He died in October 1816.
I married Elizabeth Alden, daughter of John Alden of Clarement County, New Hampshire, and myself and wife with my brother Nathan and wife started for the West. We arrived at Olyann and purchased a boat, and descended the river Ohio to Cincinnati, state of Ohio, where we lived four years, and then I removed to the state of Indiana, where I lived until the year 1832...."
