Ok! have a question for you about Charles but first some background. I found an article from 23 Sep 1873 in the Daily Kennebec Journal (Augusta, Maine) in which it states that friends were concerned because Charles H Pettingill formerly of Auburn is missing. He had been living in South Carolina and had recently been in Illinois buying horses for the southern market. He had not been heard of since Aug 1 when he had written that he would return to SC by Sep 1.

With that info and a google search I was wondering if this is the same Charles who was a race starter and was involved with a controversial race involving Man Of War when Charles was in his 70's.

Could this be your relative?
