Dr. Stan Pettingill paid a modern investigator in UK to follow the document source for all of the Pettengills of any spelling, and he did find the original church records of marriages and baptisms and burials. I have a complete copy in my filmed collection in Utah. There is no doubt that Richard was baptized in a Church of England and shipped out of Norwich. If one looks carefully at a copy of the "Pettingell Genealogy," you can readily tell if all records had been examined and their condition. If there is a specific question about one of the 19 ships named Mayflower, please send it to me. Recently a cousin wrote to me that a member of his family had visited a new exhibit in Orlando, Fl, claiming that the Pettingills came from Portugal. This is an old tale by one family and there is no historical basis for it. More likely, it is that the Pettingill family is a remnant of the old Iceni people, since they came from the same area of Norfolk or from Danish conquerors who held the area for some hundreds of years.
In my collection there are copies of all of the old wills, and church records that were found by a professional genealogist. A filmed version may be rented at any local Family History Center.
Nice to hear from you, we are over 80 and members of the Kaiser Hospice group, but of sound mind.
