Dear fellow descendants of Richard Pettengill,
I am pleased to find this forum and see that there is an active interest in Pettengill genealogy!
Knowing that I have some interest in our familyís genealogy, my uncle recently delivered some ancient papers to me. They contain photos, accounts, an obituary, and other materials belonging to Daniel A. Pettengill, the first. After reading them I thought that the rest of my extended family would enjoy them, too.
In case you are not familiar with him, Daniel was born March 11, 1825, in Andover. He was the father of Herbert Ernest Pettengill and the grandfather of I. W. Pettengill, Sr. That makes him my great-great-grandfather. Daniel is a direct descendant of Richard Pettengill who came from England to Salem before 1640.
In the Pettengill Genealogy of 1906, Daniel is number 122. My great-grandfather was Herbert Earnest Pettengill, number 208. My grandfather was Irving Wilbert.
I have transcribed for you what I think are the most interesting pieces from this little collection of papers. First is an eight page hand-written autobiography. Second is a testimonial which appears to have been written for the nineteen year-old Daniel by his minister. Finally we have his obituary from an unknown newspaper. You may find my transcriptions of them at http://users.rcn.com/pettengill/dap.
Some years ago I used the information from the obituary to locate Danielís gravesite in Haverhill, MA. He lies interred with his three wives, Mary, Susan, and Caroline, and two children who died as infants. The headstones are worn but legible.
I hope that you enjoy these writings.
Daniel Abbott Pettengill
