Malen Wheeler Petro, 81, of Vandalia, formerly of Lincoln, died at 8:35 p.m. Saturday, July 4, 1998, at Marion Veterans Administration Medical Center in Marion. He was a retired inspector for the Federal Railroad and a veteran of World War ll. Mr Petro was a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Moose Lodge and Eagles , all of Vandalia. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Lincoln. He was born March 12, 1917, at Broadwell, a son of George and Grace Musick Petro. he married Doris Awanda Long Hicks May 14, 1965, in Lincoln. She survives. Also Surviving are four sons, Roy, Rex, and Larry Hicks, all of Clayton and Jack Hicks of Mesquite, Nev.; four daughters , Dianna Whiteman of Lincoln, Roxanne Henderson of Decatur, Donelle Conaway of Vandalia and Becky Stroud of Las Vegas, Nev., 25 grandchildren, and 30 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, three brothers, one sister and one grandson. Funeral services will be at 2 pm Thursday at Miller Funeral Home in Vandalia, with the Rev. Joe Kawson officiating. Buriel, with military rites, will be at Fairlawn Cemetery, Vandalia. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 pm Wednesday at Miller Funeral Home, Vandalia. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association.
