Our story starts in Farnell, County Angus, Scotland with James Petrie (b. Oct 1772) and his wife, Isabella Greig (b. abt 1783). Several sons are born to this couple. David Petrie is born 3 Sep 1804 in Drumhendrie, Parish of Fettercairn, Kincardineshire, Scotland. David’s brother, Alexander Petrie, is born on 22 Sep 1825 in St. Cyrus Parish, Kincardineshire.
The above David has a son, James Petrie, born 6 Nov 1841 in County Forfar, St. Vigeans, Arbroath.
James has a son, James Petrie, born 6 Sep 1879 in Liverpool, Lancashire, England.
This second James has a daughter, Swanhild Petrie, born 9 Oct 1912 in St. Paul, Minnesota, USA.
Swanhild and husband, Maurice Anderson, have three daughters. The oldest is Patricia Anderson.
Patricia marries George Willhite and has a son, Jeff Willhite, born in St. Paul, Minnesota, USA.
We next go back to Alexander Petrie’s line. Alexander and wife, Janet (“Jessie”) Logie, have a son, James Petrie, born 23 Jun 1856 Cottar House of Fordhouse, Dun, Angus.
James has a daughter, Jessie Petrie, born in Braidwood village, Scotland. She marrieds John Lockhart.
Jessie and John have a son, Robert Lockhart, born 3 Dec 1925 in Lanark.
Robert has a daughter, Alison Lockhart, born in St. Andrews, Scotland who marries Max Breheny in Beijing, China.
Alison and Max move to Alice Springs in the Outback of Australia. There they have a daughter, Ailsa Breheny, born in Melbourne, Australia and now living in Alice Springs.
And now the small world part.
Jeff Willhite (GGG grandson of David Petrie born 1804) is sent from St. Paul, Minnesota, USA on a military assignment to (Where else?) Alice Springs, Australia. He is assigned to work with an Australian counter-part and ends up spending three years working with Max Breheny – the father of Jeff’s seventh cousin, Ailsa Breheny (GGG granddaughter of Alexander Petrie born 1825)!
I wouldn’t have believed this either but Ailsa had posted the exact same portrait that I have of my great grandfather (James Petrie born 1841) on her own web site. My brother Bob Petrie came across the portrait which is how this whole coincidence began to unfold.
