A biography/family history of Donald Petrie, Martinsdale, MT, is included in "Montana, Its Story and Biography", Vol 3, pages 993 and 994.
Donald was born 3 Jun 1875, son of David Petrie and Anna (Farquarson)Petrie. David Petrie was born 1847, Perthshire, Scotland and died at Stirling, Scotland, in 1915. Annie Farquharson Petrie was born in Spital of Glenshee, Perthshire, Scotland, in 1856, and died at Stirling, Scotland, in 1910. David and Anna had the following children: John (livestock agent, Lincoln, NE); Andrew (deceased); David (grocer, Buffalo, NY); James (died in childhood); Alexander (men's furnishings, Sheridan, WY); George (sheep raiser, Omaha, NE); Donald A. (Martinsdale, MT); James and Peter (merchants, Opal, WY), Finley, (store clerk, Opal, WY); Robert (painter and decorator, London, England); Mary (Mrs. William Malnock, Stirling, Scotland), Charles (died in childhood).
Donald attended schools in Perthsire and remained in Scone until he was nine years of age when he moved with his parents to Bankefoot, Perthsire, Scotland. He left school at age 14 and worked on neighboring farms.
In 1900, Donald came to the US and spent the first three years on a farm owned by his uncle, John Farquharson, in Campbell, Franklin county, NE. In 1903, he went to Buffalo, WY, where he was a store clerk. In 1905, he moved to Martinsdale, MT, where worked for a merchant, H.E. Marshall, until Jun 1915 when Donald bought out his employer and founded the Martinsdale Mercantile Company.
In 1902, Bloomington, NE, Donald married Miss Anna Robertson, born at Stirling, Scotland. Petrie children: Lillian, b. 4 Jan 1904; Winifred Grace, b. 1 Jan 1913.
