Brandy;
A cousin and I have been researching every Petrie family that lived in the colonies prior to the Revolution.
As part of his research on our ancestor George Petrie (who settled in Sydney Nova Scotia in 1785 with his wife and a son Edmund), one of my cousins did extensive researsch on Alexander and Elizabeth and their sons Alexander, George and Edmund of Charleston.Based on my follow-on work on George, I think that we concluded that they were not Loyalists.I suspect that they were scottish or british.Please write me at [email protected] and I will be happy to forward your correspondence to him.
I am focusing on someone who I think is another Edmund Petrie.In the Saluda and Little River Settlements, 200 acres had been granted to Col. Brown in the folk between the Broad and Saludy Rivers on the Beaver Dam Branch (probably later in Berekley County).On Dec 9, 1774, Edmund acquired the acres.
I think that this second Edmund had at least two sons who served as soldiers in our Revolution.I think that one son was Ninian Petrie (later Newman Petrie) who as part of the Roseway Associates was granted land in Shelburne Nova Scotia.I think Ninian married Catherine Campbell on 20 Dec 1781 at St. Philips in Charleston.
Hope someday to go to Charleston to the Carolinia Museum to prove (or disprove) my hypotheses.
Thank you!
Joe Petrie
