An amateur gene'ist for our (Petrea) family says that (quote) Rupp's collection reads "Johan Jacob Petry, age 21, List 970, Palatines imported in the ship Loyal Judith, James Cowery Master, from Rotterdam, last from Cowes, qualified September 2, 1743 at Philadelphia (unquote) She also states (no authority given) that list 97x (third digit not clear)included at least a few men from the area of Essenheim, on the wiest side of the Rhyne, south and west of Mainz, so there is some possibility that Johan Jacob Petry's home was there also. Since Alsace & Lorraine at various times were under French contril this might account for accasional famly tradition that the Petreas were French Huguenots.
I have lots of generations of Petreas who came to Stokes county now Forsyth county (Winston-Salem NC). My immediate ancestors moved on to Mt. Pleasant North Carolina when Dorothy (uncertain maiden name), the widow of John Petry, born August 26 1750 at Berks County PA, moved her brood there (to Mt. Pl) after John died in 1790. The name changed from Petry to Petrea.
I would like to know the exact origin in Germany (?) also, since they were clearly Lutheran in Forsyth county. I have seen Anna Eva Kuehnlin's grave in the Lutheran cemetery in Rural Hall, NC, at Nazareth lutheran Church. Were they Lutherans in Germany also? I'm a Lutheran pastor. Is it in the genes?
