R. Wayne Peterson, age 81 of Spicer formerly of Ruthton, died December 25, 2007 at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar.
Funeral services were held at Peace Lutheran Church in New London. Burial at Lebanon Cemetery in New London. Military honors provided by the Spicer American Legion Post #545.
Richard "Wayne" Peterson was born on June 2, 1926, in Slayton, MN, the son of Edwin and Eathel (McLain) Peterson. He grew up on the family farm with his three brothers and two sisters. Wayne attended Brookside Country School, and Slayton High School. After high school he entered the United States Navy where he served his country as a Navy Corpman until his honorable discharge in 1944.
On February 11, 1949 Wayne was united in marriage to Bernetta (Bert) Holck. To this union two sons and one daughter were born. The family lived in Ruthton where Wayne worked as a custodian and bus driver for the Ruthton Public Schools. In 1968 he began working at the MN Department of transportation as an office manager. In 1977 Wayne and Bert moved to Spicer where he continued to work until his retirement on August 17, 1988. Together they shared in 58 years of marriage before Bert passed away on May 16, 2007.
Wayne was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in New London. He also was a life member of the Spicer American Legion Post #545. He enjoyed living at Skyline where he was very proud of his gardens, and collections of stamps, coins, cookie jars, and fishing tackle. Wayne enjoyed going to auctions, and going fishing. He also was a big sports fan, volunteering as the manager of the Ruthton baseball team and also umpiring. Most of all Wayne was proud of his grandchidren and great grandchildren, speaking of them often.
He is survived by his children, Stu of Ruthton, Don of Spicer, Julie (and Rick) Reese of Woodstock; grandchildren Sara, (and Chad) Karbo of Balaton, Brendon (and Tanya) Reese of Cedar Grove, NJ, Amanda (and Mike) Felt of Spicer, Erica (and Paul) Varcoe of Sioux Falls, SD, Lynsey Reese of Woodstock; great grandchildren, Hannah Jensen, Alexander Reese, and Noah Varcoe. He is also survived by his sister, Jean Gilbertson of Maple Grove, and brother, Dale Peterson of Ruthton.
Wayne was preceded in death by his wife, Bert; parents, Edwin and Eathel, brothers, Harold and Arvid; and sister, Joyce.
