Peterson/Petersson - New Jersey/Delaware
Looking for a connection between the Peterson/Petersson's and Cornelison families of New Sweden (now New Jersey/Delaware).
My x-gr-grandmother was Rebeckah Cornelison, born 1748, possibly in what is now Salem County, NJ.She married 1) Aron Dunlap; 2)William Denis; 3)John Savoy. She and her husband, John Savoy, are buried at Old Swede's Church in Wilmington.
i have two very old notes, probably written in the early 1800's, which state that Rebeckah's Mother was Ann Peterson and her Father was Cornelius Cornelison. However, I have never been able to connect Rebeckah to this couple.
Apparently there was a court case in the mid- to late 1800's, brought by some of Rebeckah's descendants, concerning some Peterson land in New Jersey, title to which appeared to have been stolen from the family.I also have a copy of an affidavit given by Ann Peterson, the daughter of Gabriel Peterson, which states how the land was stolen.I have nothing that tells me if the case went forward or not, and if so, what the outcome was.
I also have another very old note, probably done in the 1800's, which appears to be written by a young (guessing, teenager) boy which states that his name is Andrew Peterson and he has the mark on his forehead to prove it.I do not know if this note is related to the above case.
Cornelius Cornelison and his wife Ann, appear a number of times in the "Records of the Swedish Lutheran Churches at Raccoon and Penns Neck" indicating that they had been godparents for Peterson children and Peterson's had been godparents to their children. However, Rebeckah is not mentioned as a child of Cornelius.
Can anyone help me solve this very intriguing mystery?
Thanks in advance and please e-mail me directly.
