Beverly, 101 of 34 Hall Street Portland, Maine , formerly of Machias, Maine died Saturday July 20, 1974 on her 101st birthday at Seaside Nursing Home in Portland, Maine. She was born Marry Betty Petersen in New Denmark, Victoria County, New Brunswick , Canada on July 20, 1873. She was the daughter of Christian Johannes Petersen and Frederikke Conradine (Krag) Petersen of Helsingor, Denmark. She came to Calais, Maine from New Denmark, Victoria Co, New Brunwick Canada as a young woman and moved to Machias where she lived most of her life. Her husband, Walter Herbert Beverly died in 1941. Mary and Walter were married 27 May 1896. She had been a part-time resident of the Portland area for the past thirty years. Mrs. Beverly was a member of the Center Street Congregational Church of Machias and was a past president of the Ladies Aid of that church. She was a life member of the Order Of The Eastern Star. An enthusiastic volunteer, she had worked hundreds of hours as a hospital aide in Augusta, Maine where she once lived and she also had knit hundreds of pairs of mittens for the childrens home for Little Wanderers organization in Waterville, Maine. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Frank (Winnifred) Haines of Augusta, Maine and Mrs. Fred (Marguerite) Miller of Portland; four sons, John Moulton Beverly of Oregon, Elliott Lawrence Beverly of Newtonville, Massachusetts, Robert Drummond Beverly of Brunswick, Maine, and Walter H. Beverly Jr. of Reistertown, Maryland; 14 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren and a great grandchild. Funeral services will be held at 2pm Wednesday in Center Street Congregational Church, Machias, Maine with the Rev. William Riddiough officiating. Internment will be in the CouRt Street Cemetery in Machias, Maine I wanted to add that my great grandmother was quite a lady. She would get up every morning at the nursing home and get dressed in a dress, put on her make-up and jewelry, style Her hair just so. She would eat breakfast and then go visit every person in the nursing home. The nursing home had four wings. She said that it was good exercise to walk around. She said that walking prevented her rheumatism for bothering her. I used to work at that nursing home and I worked there when she was a patient there. On July 20, 1974 "Grammie Beverly" had what she referred to as a good breakfast. She had taken a bath , dressed up and was so very anxious to see her son Walter who was coming from Maryland to see her on her birthday. Grammie Beverly had an "elegant" lunch as she called it that day. Walter and his wife Irene came about 1pm and we all went down to the day room and visited. After a couple of hours we walked Grammie Beverly back to her room. She gave us all a big hug and a kiss and she sat on the side of her bed and said that she was tired and that she was ready for the Lord to take her home. She layed down and we held her hands and she died. We were sad to lose her. She lived a full life. she was 101. She was hanging on to see Walter on her birthday. I had never seen any one die in the manner in which she did. Everyone said that she was always in such control of her life and was in such great control right through to the end. She is dearly missed by all who knew her. She always said that way back in Denmark the Petersen name had once been Pedersen. She also said that for as long as she could remember her father required the children to speak Danish at the dinner table. Followups: No followups yet Notify Administrator about this message?
