Adam Peter Armstrong county Pa
Researching
Adam Peter ( Peters )
Of Sugar Creek / Queenstown Armstrong County Pennsylvania.
Adam Peters appears on the 1800 Armstrong County Census. The 1stcensus for Armstrong county.Adam Peter was born between 1755 and 1775.All other generations list the name as Peters.Adam may have been a shoe maker as some of these tools were listed after his death at sheriffs sale.He was of German origin. His wife’s name may have been Catherine_____.He is first documented on the 1800 Armstrong County census. He doesn't appear on the 1790 Pa census. He settled on Sugar Creek in Armstrong County Pennsylvania. It is possible he had friends or family in the area.He settled on a land patent of one James Miller. ( Patent # H 52-330 ) Miller sells the Warrantee of land to William Crawford.Crawford is granted a patent.
Adam Peter applied for the patent on 630 acres on 8 April 1805.Claiming Crawford was in default for not having settled and improved the land in the required time frame. And that he, Adam Peter had cleared 20 acres and built a barn and cabin. He was likely in the area as early as 1798. ( Pa Dept of internal affairs land records Proof of settlement Armstrong Co. Roll # 14.1)However,Adam's application was never granted.Miller held the Warrant until 1855.( VOL H # 52 Pg 330-320G 179-159)
Miller sells the land to Charles Campbell.( VOL # 16 Pg 372 Book C page 137-144.
In 1817 Adam Peter files a surrender claim in the Kittanning recorder of deeds office surrendering all claims to the land with out any compensation from Charles Campbell.
It would appear, that Adam Peter had the land he had settled cleared and improved sold out from under him after 17 years or more of living on it.However, Adam Peter and his sons all continue to live on and settle land in the area.It would appear that some type of "off the books" arrangement had been made between the Peter family and the titled owners of the land.Adam died on 3 March 1826. There is a notation by the lawyer in the sheriff’s sale papers stating that he rode to Kittanning to see about a pension. There is no other information. This wouls suggest military service but I have been unable to locate and further information. The family bible was printed in Germany and the inscriptions are also in German. These are the known children of Adam Peter:
Maria Peters B. 6 June 1791 d. 14 Jan 1814 In Sugar Creek Twp.
Unkown Peters B. 23 Jan 1793
Jacob A. Peters B.24 April 1795d. 4 Dec 1868 Married Catherine Silvis (see below)
There is some question as to the maiden name and birth date of Catherine Silvis.
The LDS web site list her maiden name as Briceland. However, there is no Briceland family in the geographical location in the correct time frame for her to have married Jacob Peters,
Additionally, The LDS web site gives the name Catherine Briceland 3 times in the same family.Showing her as her own daughter in law.Despite my attempts, I have been unable to locate the source of Briceland as Catherine sir name.
If Catherine’s maiden name is indeed Silvis, as I believe it is.Then this evidence would support that:
her youngest child Peter has Silvis as mothers maiden name on death record.
David Silvis, Catherine’s father, lived in the same geographic location as the Peters family
Catherine appears on the 1850 census giving her birth year as 1796, The same year as the baptism record on the Silvis web site. 7 July 1796
Her tomb stone gives the birth date as 6 July 1798.It is likely that she was baptized on July the 7th and the year of 1798 versus 1796 is an error.
