(Sgt.) John J. Pershing, Ohio
I have a letter that was found in my husbands great grandfathers wallet that is to Brig. General John H. Rice from John Pershing. I have other books with these names and am not sure if there is a family connection. Can anyone tell me who John Rice is?
American Expeditionary Forces, February 19, 1919.
Breg. General John H. Rice
Chief Ordnance Officer. A.E.F.
My Dear General Rice:
I desire to commend and give my personal thanks to the officer's and enlisted men of the Ordnance Department of the American Expeditionary Forces for their untiring efforts and loyal support which were so vital to the successful efforts of our combatant unit.
During active operations extending from January 1916 when our first division entered the line, until the close of hostilitieson November 11th, our troops were supplied with the equipment and ammunition necessary to carry on their work to a successful conclusion. I realize the tremendous difficulties of organization and administration which had to be overcome for your department to properly fulfill its functions in this respect. The repair and maintenance system that you established was a great success, and the results obtained under existing circumstances reflect great credit upon the officers and enlisted men of your department.
Sincerely yours,
(Sgt.) John J. Pershing
Commander in Chief, A.E.F.
