James A. PERRY Dooly-Crisp Co, GA 1800s
After many years of research, I am still trying to resolve the parentage of James A. PERRY (1827-1893) of Dooly (now Crisp) Co, GA. One possibility is that he was one of the eight children of Terrell PERRY (son of Thornton) & Penelope WARD.
The estate papers of his father-in-law Solomon FOREHAND show a distribution to Solomon's PERRY grandchildren. Solomon's daughter Eliza was married to James A. PERRY abt 1848. I have not been able to document the date or place. The first mention that I have of James A. & Eliza FOREHAND PERRY is the 1850 Dooly Co, GA, census. In the household is 14-year-old Frances D. PERRY. No one has been able to explain who she is. James A. is too young to have been her father (he was only 23 at the time).
Unfortunately, Eliza died young (possibly in childbirth?) and information on her is, therefore, limited. She is buried in Crisp Co, GA, but not in the cemetery where her husband was buried (Ebenezer Baptist Church). The area that they lived in, formerly in Dooly Co, is now in Crisp Co, near Cordele. She died before 1870; in that census year, James is shown without a wife. Shortly thereafter, James A. PERRY married secondly to Mary Frances BUNDRICK, from whom I descend. After Mary Frances's death, he married at least one more time but apparently had children by only the first two wives.
Solomon FOREHAND lived in Houston & Macon Co, GA. Both Solomon FOREHAND & Terrell PERRY were in Houston Co in the 1840 census. This seems to indicate a possible link of James A. to the Thornton PERRY family (a son of James A.'s second marriage was named Charles Robert Thornton).
James A. PERRY had the following known children by Eliza FOREHAND:
Andrew S. Zachariah b 1849
Penelope A. b 1852 m John Franklin BUNDRICK (brother of James A. PERRY's second wife)
Mary A. b 1853
William b 1855 (died young)
James O. b 1857
Eliza D. (Dolley?) b 1858
Laura L. b 1859 m William O. HAMILTON (she died not long after their marriage)
Ira T.J. [Thomas Jefferson?] H. "Tom?" b 1861?
Liddy b 1863
Edwin A. (Ed?) b 1864
Francis V. (female) 17 Jan 1865 m Thomas CULPEPPER
Infant died 1866
Female infant born & died 25 Jun 1868
I have had difficulty in tracking these children--most must have left the area; others probably died young. If anyone knows more about these children, I would be interested.
I would also appreciate information about James A. & Eliza's whereabouts before 1850.
By James A. PERRY's second wife, Mary Frances BUNDRICK, he had the following children:
Ola b 1872
John Edward (or Esdras?) b 24 Nov 1873
Sarah Samuel b 10 Sep 1874
Leotis (or Lee Otis), female, b 11 April 1875
Ionn H. "Onie" b 1878
Charles Robert Thornton (named for earlier Thornton?) b 1881
There were two James PERRYs in Dooly-Crisp Co, GA at the same time. James A. PERRY was referred to as "Hog Jim." The other James--James J. PERRY, born 21 Sep 1817 in Laurens Co, GA--was known as "Sheep Jim." The two Jims were supposed to have been cousins.
In the 1880 census, James A. PERRY states that his father was born NC (but his mother was born GA), which would indicate that he is somehow related to the other PERRYs who came out of NC including the ones in Laurens Co.
Thanks.
