========================================================== SOURCE: Weekly Telegram | Eau Claire, Wisconsin | Thursday, January 22, 1903 | Page 11 ========================================================== AMERICA'S OLDEST ACTIVE EDITOR ELIZABETH CITY, N.C., claims the oldest active editor in the United States. He is Col. Richard Benbury Creecy, who celebrated his 89th birth anniversary Dec. 18th. His career has been remarkable for the steady service he has rendered his native state in almost three-quarters of a century of labor in the sanctum, in the forum and in the field. His townspeople universally look to him as the respected ____ and fount of wisdom and history, where youth goes to garner knowledge and the elders seek advice. Col. Creecy was born in Greenfield, Chowan Co., N.C. He graduated from Edeton Academy, learned to manage his father's large plantation, then devoted himself to the study of law. After several years practice he engaged upon the life of a planter on the estate of his father-in-law, Edmund Perkins. When the Civil War came on Colonel Creecy left the plow to bear a sword. At its close he took up a pen to fight the battles of the people against "carpet-baggery", and his active participation in public affairs in his capacity of editor has not been remitted. He expects to continue, in good health, his useful labors for many years. =========================================================== NOTE: I am not related to this gentleman. I have listed the source for my posting above. I have no further information to provide. Sincerely; Denise Perkins Ready (Transcriber) Notify Administrator about this message?
